🌄 Welcome to Central Queensland's Gemfields

Central Queensland is home to the world's only source of parti-colored sapphires - unique gemstones displaying green, blue, and yellow in one stone. We're a family-run mining operation in the historic Sapphire gemfields, continuing a tradition that dates back to the 1870s.

🇦🇺 LOCATION: CENTRAL QUEENSLAND

Our mine is located near the town of Sapphire, Queensland - about 270km west of Rockhampton. This region has produced sapphires for over 150 years and is famous worldwide for its unique parti-colored stones found nowhere else on Earth.

☀️ 5:30 AM - Early Morning Start

Mining days start early in Queensland. We arrive at the claim before sunrise to beat the heat - summer temperatures can reach 40°C (104°F) by midday.

Morning routine:

  • 5:30 AM: Coffee and safety briefing
  • 🔧 6:00 AM: Equipment check and maintenance
  • 📋 6:30 AM: Review the day's excavation plan
  • ⛏️ 7:00 AM: Mining begins

Safety is our top priority. Every team member wears proper protective equipment, and we follow strict Australian mining regulations.

⛏️ 7:00 AM - Excavation Process

Queensland sapphires are found in ancient basalt flows, typically 3-15 meters below the surface. The excavation process involves:

Step 1: Removing Overburden

The top layers of soil and rock (overburden) must be removed to reach the sapphire-bearing gravel layer called "wash." We use excavators and loaders for this heavy work.

Step 2: Identifying the Wash Layer

The "wash" is a distinctive layer of gravel and clay that contains sapphires. Experienced miners can identify it by color, texture, and composition. This skill takes years to develop!

Step 3: Extracting the Wash

Once we locate the wash layer, we carefully extract it and transport it to our washing plant. This material will be processed to separate sapphires from gravel and clay.

💡 INTERESTING FACT:

Queensland's sapphire-bearing basalt flows are 35-50 million years old! The unique geological conditions that created parti-colored sapphires exist only in this region.

💧 10:00 AM - Washing & Processing

The wash material goes through our processing plant where water and mechanical agitation separate sapphires from clay and lighter materials.

The Washing Process:

  1. Primary wash: Material is fed into rotating drums with high-pressure water jets that break up clay
  2. Screening: Material passes through screens of different sizes to separate by particle size
  3. Gravity separation: Heavier sapphires settle while lighter materials wash away
  4. Final rinse: Concentrated material gets a final wash to remove remaining clay

This process uses recycled water in a closed-loop system to minimize environmental impact - we're committed to responsible mining practices.

💎 1:00 PM - The Exciting Part: Sorting!

After washing, we have concentrated gravel that contains sapphires. Now comes the most exciting part - hand-sorting to find the gems!

Sorting Process:

Initial sort: We spread the washed material on sorting tables and pick out obvious sapphires by hand. Experienced eyes can spot the telltale glint of sapphire among the gravel.

What we look for:

  • Luster: Sapphires have a distinctive glassy shine
  • 🌈 Color: Blue, green, yellow, or parti-colored combinations
  • 💎 Crystal form: Hexagonal barrel shapes are common
  • ⚖️ Weight: Sapphires are denser than most other minerals

🌈 PARTI-COLORED SAPPHIRES!

The most exciting finds are parti-colored sapphires - stones showing multiple colors in one gem. These are found ONLY in Queensland and are highly sought after by collectors and jewelers. Each one is completely unique! Browse our parti sapphire collection.

📊 3:00 PM - Grading & Quality Assessment

Once sorted, sapphires are cleaned and graded based on:

Factor What We Look For
Color Saturation, tone, hue, parti-color patterns
Clarity Inclusions, transparency, eye-clean quality
Size Carat weight, dimensions
Shape Crystal form, cutting potential
Quality Overall gem quality, market value

The best stones are set aside for cutting and polishing. Learn more: Gemstone Grading Guide
